The comeback

Utah led 2-0 before the ten-minute mark of the first period, on the way to a hat trick by Logan Cooley. Montreal tied the game three separate times: at 2-2, at 3-3, and at 4-4.

Cooley completed his hat trick on the power play to give the Mammoth a 3-2 lead, and Utah led again late in the third. Adam Engstrom tied it 4-4 with 5:06 left in regulation, scoring his first career NHL goal on a wrist shot past Sebastian Cossa.

In overtime, Caufield scored on the rush with assists from Lane Hutson and Nick Suzuki. It was Caufield's 15th career overtime goal.

Suzuki's return

Captain Nick Suzuki had missed six games. He returned with a goal and two assists and was named the game's first star.

Kirby Dach scored a power-play goal and added an assist. Arber Xhekaj also scored for Montreal, and Jakub Dobes made 16 saves.

For Utah, Cooley's hat trick came with an assist for a four-point night. Nick Schmaltz had a goal and two assists.

Why this one mattered

On Tuesday, Montreal lost 5-4 in overtime to Winnipeg after blowing a 4-0 lead with 2:39 remaining in regulation — the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history. Thursday's game was the response: down early, down late, and finished in overtime.

Montreal is 10-3-3. Utah is 10-6-1 and took a point from the loss.

What is next

The Canadiens play in Toronto on Saturday night against the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. The Mammoth continue east and play the Senators in Ottawa on Saturday.
