Prime Minister Mark Carney will spend nine days on the road this month. The Prime Minister's Office announced Wednesday that Carney will travel to Ireland, the Philippines, Cambodia and China from November 11 to 19, representing Canada at four international summits.
The itinerary
In Dublin, Carney will attend the Summit of the European Political Community. The PMO notes that Canada and the European Union recently launched the Alliance for the Future, and are working toward Canada becoming the EU's first Associate Member.
In Manila, he will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit as Guest of the Chair. In Phnom Penh, he will attend the Sommet de la Francophonie — Canada hosts the Sommet in 2028.
The trip ends in Shenzhen, China, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' Meeting.
The stated purpose
The PMO frames the trip as diversifying Canada's international partnerships: opening new markets, attracting new investment, and advancing Canada's interests in trade, investment, culture and security.
The Dublin stop carries a Chronicle ledger file with it. The Chronicle has recorded the government's commitment to define an ever-closer association of Canada to the EU by the 2027 summit, and Carney's expectation of concluding associate-membership negotiations at a June meeting of European leaders. Neither check falls due this month — both are recorded so the receipts exist before the outcomes do.
