Federal tracker: Liberal lead narrows to 13 points as Conservatives gain for a third straight week

The latest Liaison Strategies national tracker, released October 26, puts the Liberals at 44 per cent, the Conservatives at 31 per cent, and the NDP at 14 per cent among decided and leaning voters. The Liberal lead has narrowed for a third consecutive week, from 18 points at the start of October to 13 points now. Liaison surveyed 1,000 Canadians from October 11 to 24 by interactive voice response and random digit dialling; the margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Liaison principal David Valentin said: "The Conservatives have added a point in each of the past three updates, taking them from 28% to 31%. Over the same period, the Liberals have slipped from 46% to 44%." Prime Minister Mark Carney's own numbers are not moving with his party's: 65 per cent approve of his performance, up from 64 per cent last week, while 27 per cent disapprove. The tracker lands ten days before the federal budget on Thursday, November 5 — the document that will test whether the narrowing is about money, and whether any party's numbers move when the spending is in print.
