The votes are counted: what the new term decides on your street

Published Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Toronto has its answer: Olivia Chow is re-elected with 532,201 votes (54.16 per cent) to John Bradford's 404,013 (41.11 per cent), on turnout of 45.84 per cent across all 1,431 polls. Seven of the 25 council seats change hands. The result is unofficial until the City Clerk certifies it.

The first test of the new term is the first budget. During the campaign, Mayor Chow promised property taxes would stay around the rate of inflation; September inflation ran 3.1 per cent. That promise is entry 8 in The Record, the Chronicle's promises ledger, and it will be checked against the budget when it lands.

Closer to the curb: every election sign in the city must come down by Thursday, October 29, and City Drop-Off Depots will take signs for recycling until Thursday, November 12. The fare cap and the city-wide school food program are among the commitments The Record tracks from here.
